Civics Education to become more Patriotic in Florida
The Florida State Board of Education approved a new rule on Wednesday to shape civic education in public schools. The rule centers on teaching students characteristics of how to be an "upright and desirable" citizen. Some of these characteristics, according to the rule, include:
"Respect for the military, elected officials, civic leaders, public servants, and all those who have defended the blessings of liberty in pursuit of the common good, even at personal risk."
Students will be required to understand the United States' founding documents and learn about how other ideologies, such as communism and totalitarianism, differ from American Democracy.
Governor Ron DeSantis claims that the new curriculum will be "fundamental." These changes were a priority to top Republican lawmakers and DeSantis during the legislative session that ended on April 30th.
The state is currently in the process of purchasing new textbooks.
