#6 - Campus Crime

A series of crimes took place at Towson University on Monday

On Monday, October 4, 2021, a shelter in place order was issued to students and faculty at Towson University in Towson, Maryland. A series of crimes took place on campus before ending in Baltimore City. According to police, the crimes began after a 911 caller reported a BMW driving recklessly as he traveled the wrong way down Stevenson Lane around 5 p.m.

The suspect was chasing a Toyota Highlander and tried to ram the vehicle off the road. He blocked the Toyota Highlander after it turned off on another street. He proceeded to exit his vehicle and, according to the victim, reached for a handgun at his waistband. The victim stated that she "was terrified for her life and the safety of her daughter." The suspect then continued onto Osler Drive, located on the Towson campus. Where he was then involved in a hit-and-run that took place between Cross Campus and Emerson drives.

An officer arrived at the scene to investigate before he was assaulted by the suspect. According to the officer, "the guy started running." A student who witnessed the incident stated that "he started running on the grass, trying to get away from the cop. They both slipped and they continued to run over there. More people started coming, the helicopter started coming."

The suspect then removed his shirt in shoes in a wooded area where he allegedly threatened a witness at gunpoint. According to the Charging Documents, "the victim stated Elzey looked at him, reached toward his waistband area and shouted, 'Do you wanna get shot? Best back up.' The victim saw Elzey pull a black object partially from his waistband before fleeing."

Not long after, a carjacking incident was reported in a paring lot of a nearby hospital. The owner of the vehicle was receiving a flu shot along with her children. The suspect knocked down the victim before stealing her keys and her car.

The suspect was then found and apprehended in Baltimore after he bailed from the vehicle.

According to police, the suspect, Zaron Savyon Elzey, 19, of Owings Mills, is also wanted in an attempted first-degree murder charge. The murder attempt took place in December 2020 where Elzey violated home confinement.  Elzey was not the shooter, but the getaway driver. According to court documents, Elzey missed 9 out of 10 of his home-confinement appointments.  Elzey is currently being held without bond, pending a bail review, at the Baltimore County Detention Center.
